My next project is based around sustainable Development Goals. I have to select one specific SDG to focus on, but before making a decision I will do some research into each of them, as well as the topic of SDGs as a whole.
What are SDGs?
The Sustainable Development goals or Global Goals, were invented by the United Nations in 2015, aiming to act as a worldwide call-to-action to protect the planet, end poverty and promote peace by 2030.
There are 17 of these SDGs, which all cover a range of different issues facing the planet. They have a balance of social, environmental and economic sustainability goals. Countries have committed to prioritise progress for those who're furthest behind. The SDGs are designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls.
Alll the SDGs
I’m going to check out each SDG and made a note of the official goals they all had for 2030, to see which ones resonated with me the most and which one I might pick for my project. It’s interesting to see how many of these we are currently close to achieving, and ones that have a long way to go. I used the official UN website for these. (These were all taken off the website!!)
1. No Poverty: Eradicate poverty in all forms worldwide.
Goals:
- Reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions by 2030
- Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all and achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable
- Ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as basic services, ownership and control over land and other property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services.
- Build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters
- Ensure significant mobilisation of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions
- Create sound policy frameworks at the national, regional and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions.
2. Zero Hunger: End hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture.
Goals:
- End all forms of malnutrition by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons
